Algae and duckweed have a green future. Taken by areal protein production these crops are far more productive than every other arable crop. Algae have been the basis of the marine food web for millions of years and species can be found in every imaginable water body.

The company Algaecom has developed a sustainable production method to culture algae on an agricultural scale and these systems have been tested in several pilot plants.

Vision

Algae and duckweed have a great potential. Due to their nutritional composition they are suitable for feed and food purposes. When used as a biomass stock they readily become inputs for industrial processes. Therefore these small, quickly-growing aquatic plants are an important stock for a biobased economy. Precondition is that they can be mass produced in a sustainable way against acceptable costs.

  • The growth system is suitable for production of several varying algae species in both fresh and saline medium.

The growth technique is driven by sunlight and can be operated very sustainable by using flue gasses (as a carbon source) and waste heat.

The Future for Algae

SAVE THE CLIMATE: USE ALGAE FOR STORING CO2 

Photosynthesis is nature’s way of storing solar energy. Our fossil oil comes from stored solar energy from million years ago.  Algae oil is essentially the same.

Algae are the best option to create a circular economy using waste streams to produce new crops at the highest speed possible.

Cars, aircrafts and heavy freighters have all successfully been run on algae fuels. In about a decade, algae can play an important role in the energy mix of the future.

SAVE THE RAINFOREST: DO NOT TRANSPORT PALM OIL AROUND THE WORLD

Algae oil can replace palm oil. Global corporations that consume millions of tonnes of palm oil per year are investing significant resources in research and development of algae farming. In the near future, healthy and environmentally friendly algal oil can be a sustainable  alternative for palm oil.

SAVE THE  SEA AND OCEANS: CHOOSE FOR VEGETARIAN “FISH” OIL

The omega-3 oils found in fish oil  is not produced by the fish it self but comes from algae, through the marine food chain. By growing these algae and extracting the oil directly from them, you get a completely plant-based alternative  containing the unique and beneficial omega-3 oils as in fish oil.

In this case we do not need to exploit the sea unnecessary.
